Lists with Sdnza Book. Preview — The Open by Giorgio Agamben. A must-read only if you’re really into Agamben. For those of you who don’t know it yet, I’m studying to get a Major in Letters and I had to read this in a course I’m currently taking.

The end of human history is an event that has been foreseen or announced by both messianics and dialecticians. I’d recommend it but readers with no prior reading of continental philosophy may be better off starting elsewhere.

Those who shoulder the dreary mantle of sovereignty know that their turn may come to be branded a criminal by their colleagues. Xgamben being said, there are times when he is not necessarily the most reader-friendly and yes, I realize this is critical theory, it’s going to be complex and heady by nature, but there are times The Heidegger parts mostly when mezzo could he should slow down his argument a bit and make sure everyone’s on the same page and certain sections required multiple readings before I could make any sense of them.

I’d recommend it Some really interesting stuff here, especially it’s interesting to see philosophy engage with botany and ecology and less directly ideas about the anthropecene. A collection of essays and thoughts from the early ’90s, this book is a nice refresher in Agamben’s main concepts and concerns.

However, his essay on the refugee is on point, and very important in today’s political climate. Not really that necessary in light of his other writings. A must-read only if you’re rea Sena is a good book of essays, but not necessarily essential Agamben. L’aperto doesn’t live up to the hype or to its own stated goals imo.

The last essay though ‘In this Exile Dec 01, Katie rated it it was ok Shelves: To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up. Rather like a summary of the authors of the term than anything particularly novel. It’s interesting enough but it’s also very over-flowery, the author clearly wanted to write a book for intellectuals only and as a result, the pace is very slow and the explanations are vague.

And how has he maintained his privileged place as the master of, or first among, the animals? Some really interesting stuff here, especially it’s interesting to see philosophy engage with botany and ecology and less directly ideas about the anthropecene. The depth of Agamben’s scholarship, and the command of materials that he cites is simply incredible. Agamben’s use of long quotations is always bad and this was like five straight chapters of to get this out of the way: Certain sections, such as the “Tick” section, should be interesting or dare I say captivating?

But even for those with a minimal familiarity will gain a lot from the examples, anecdotes, and applied analyses presented here. The opening essay, Forms-of-life will help you if you’re dying to be [like myself] one of those cool intellectual anarchists that understands tiqqun. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. They are interesting critiques, and sound great, but i’m not so sure how we’re ever going to become being-in-language or whatever the hell he’s talking about.

It was my first time reading him, and found his writing style to be very engaging. Not sure if this is indispensable Agamben.

One of those texts where the author is aagamben trying to share some very interesting insights into the human condition, yet one can’t help but wonder why he only wants people who have studied philosophy or critical theory to understand it.
