New York University Press. David Batstone’s excellent book on human trafficking and slavery is captured perfectly by this quote from the book. As the author points out we are at a critical juncture for human rights and everyone is needed to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

I suppose God thinks a lot of me or at least He knows He can do a lot through me since this issue is overwhelming. From Eastern European women forced into sex work in areas as close to home as their region, to as far as the middle east and Japan; youth abducted in Uganda and forced to become child soldiers; children and young women in Cambodia and Thailand sold or tricked into working in brothels against their will; and even migrant laborers who are tricked into domestic service or agricultural work in the United States, human trafficking is slavery in the 21st century that exists right now in our countries, cities, and communities.

There are no discussion topics on this book yet. That is the dark side of the story. Batstone works with entrepreneurs and investors to create forward-thinking companies that return dignity to people and planet; and shares his unique model for developing successful enterprises that create opportunities for everyone.


It’s an inspirational book that compels you to do something. But most importantly, through this hybrid of narrative nonfictional writing, the author was able to get out a very serious, and rather grim insight to the cruel and unimaginable realities of modern-day slavery.

The traffickers gain power over their victims by first recruiting those with little social power, often taking advantage of a crisis in a family or community.

They can prey on victims who will eagerly give their children a chance at an education or a better life not realizing they are handing them off to sexual slavery. But if you are looking for an easy-to-read beginner’s guide to the problem this book is for you. This is a book that everyone should read. Since reading this book I have learned that I live in the state with the third highest amount of slaves in the US.
