Du Cange mastered languages in order to pursue his main scholarly interests, medieval and Byzantine glossarrium. In this last field, Du Cange as he is more commonly known studied the historical development of Greek and Latin. Nevertheless, his academic prestige is due especially to his great contributions in the study of Byzantine history and in the development of classical philology.
