Emeralds on the home front
I blush to confess that I learned a lot of French history from these books–when other university students complimented me on my knowledge, I did not admit that I learned it from somewhat erotic novels! Of course, once Bruce is back Amber manages to screw things up nicely kthleen a fool and fresh out of likely prospects young men with moneyAmber finds herself an older one to protect her from life’s little problems.
Unfortunately the earl discovers what Amber has done and tries to poison her karhleen his son, succeeding only in killing his own son. You know what I’m talking about. He was very annoyed when he found her reading Forever Amber. And I will admit I am happy to suffer all of those things if I love the protagonist. I’m really surprised that this book has been described by so many as a “romance novel” — to me, it seems the antithesis of one. Jun 15, SarahKate rated it liked it.
As for the ending? Shortly after Amber gives birth for the second time Bruce returns just as London is taken with the plague.

If she were not so unwell, she’d love all this attention. I saw your foreber and the other pages and am not impressed. View all 74 comments. The random nature of plague would ring true for those who had lived with the constant fear of buzzbombs and V2 rockets. Maybe it was just the obligatory spaniels.

Books by Kathleen Winsor. I actually felt myself in complete despair for the people around her! I also love the character of Almsbury, who might appear to be minor, but reflects a balance that the other characters lack: Kathpeen book, with a fast-paced plot with plenty of twists and turns, culminating in a funny ending you’ll not expect.
Her life is a triumph – but for one small problem. She could have been happy yet she was so fixated on Bruce she ruined everything for herself. I first read this book in and started a life-long interest in Restoration England. This week has been a sort of harrowing of literary hells.
